Latest / Darwin Puppy Scam

December 13th, 2015 by Peter | Category: Pet Transport News

Currently there are some criminals based in the USA (North Carolina) running a Puppy Scam. This group is very active and we have received at least 20 calls in the last month from People who either have been caught or nearly caught by the Scam.

Essentially their scam is to use Internet Advertising sites to respond to ads for Pups or Kittens or other Pets and pretend they have whatever type of Pet you are looking for. Alternatively they may place ads for Pups/Kittens “free to a good home” or something similar.  They always ask for money for Pet Transport from Darwin to wherever you live and sometimes for the Pet itself. They demand payment by Western Union or some similar funds transfer system which is difficult to trace.

To make themselves sound authentic they are currently using the name “Petflyers International”. But there is no Company with this name. Our name is Petflyers, our website is petflyers.com.au and our email address is [email protected] Names similar to these but not the same are invented to scam people. If you receive correspondence from this group do not pay them money under any circumstances. They have a lot of stock photos but remember they are only photos from their Library, you will never see the Pup/Kitten in the photo.

You can report them to Scamwatch in Australia (http://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/693900) and to the USA based Internet Crime Complaint Centre  (www.ic3.gov).

Obviously these Criminals may vary their story by using different Cities, Names & Stories but here are some tips to avoid being scammed;

  • always talk to Sellers by phone rather than just relying on emails
  • if something sounds to good to be true it probably is
  • check the person is a registered breeder (refer to this RSPCA link for more details – http://kb.rspca.org.au/what-is-a-registered-breeder_328.html)
  • never pay anybody you don’t know by Western Union or similar money transfer systems
  • Phillip Harris

We have just had contact with this mob. We were looking to buy a Daschund and saw this ad on a pet site so made contact by email, ad said the dog was in Perth but when we made contact we were told that the owner had recently moved to Darwin for work.
We said that we would take the dog and would arrange transport, he said no that was alright he would arrange from his end.
We received a email from petflyers international wanting us to transfer $500 by western union to a person in Nth Carolina.
We ceased all contact with both parties.

    • Kelli Jayne

Sounds very similar to my situation.

      • Puppy2017

yes they are very active. I got the email from [email protected] they are scam. They listed puppy is available to sell at the different locations on internet http://www.truebuy.com.au/for-sale/animals/pure-white-samoyed-boys-and-girls-available_i340187 then communicate with me on email. Luckily I read this forum so didn’t move forward.

  • Kelli Jayne

Hi my name is Kelli Volker. I live in Australia. I also too got scammed but never paid them any money, fortunately. The two Chihuahua’s I was looking at getting were on the Gold Coast, but were moved to Darwin as she went up there for work. She says her name is Anna and her husband had passed on and she wanted to adopt the dogs out. Sent me pics of the babies. They were 10 weeks old apparently. When I went to Money Gram in Toowoomba to pay the $600, Money Gram refused to take my money, thank goodness!! I rang Darwin Airport. They have no knowledge of the dogs. So I emailed her back asking what the go is. She then told me only people fly out o Darwin Airport not Animals. What total crap!!! They use two pet transportation services and I was told AirAnimal Pet Movers does not exist. The email then proceeds to tell me I need to go 2 banks to make this payment, and when I get to the bank (this is mega suspect alert!), the transfer remains confidential. Or I could tell the person at the bank im sending money to a friend as a gift… (Funny but I don’t know anybody in Cameroon. I had to look on google as to where it is. Africa!!!) And if I did not follow these instructions the bank will not accept the money. I haven’t been told which bank, the name of my ‘so called friend’ Manager says they don’t receive cash as their accounts are currently under audit…. So please go to another bank an transfer the money as the company demands.” The email ends. I then asked her for her phone number. I rang it, she tells me she is in Darwin. I rang telephone directory and gave the number, its a NSW number. Needless to say i am ceasing contact with this person and reporting to the relevant authorities. Please be careful everyone!!!!

    • Kristi

      Anna luis

  • Mel P

I live in Adelaide and as recently as 1/2 hour ago I was almost scammed for puppy out of Darwin. When the final email advised me to make a western union transfer to a guy in the USA alarm bells went off (Thanks to Kate Langbrook from Mix102.3 for doing her ‘fishing’ segment otherwise I wouldn’t have known)
The guy I dealt with called himself Demi Williamson and was advertising on cracker.com.au [email protected] and the transport company is using petflyers name and are also calling themselves global pets transporters. their email address is [email protected]

  • Mis B Haven

The PUPPY SCAM continues – there are several “sellers” – Anna_Luis, Cres Adam, Damion Graham. Ask the seller if you can view the puppies. The emails are all similar in construction, with “poor” English.

    • Adrienne Martin

I am dealing with a Damion Graham Anup, to purchase a Shetland Sheepdog. Surely, this can’t be a coincidence. He has sent me an invoice with all legal terms…I am super keen on the pup he is selling…what can I do to make sure I am not scammed besides the obvious listed. He has requested a straight out bank transfer which is a Commonwealth Bank BSB…

      • Mis B Haven

I suggest you ask to view the dog.

The scams always have 1 male & 1 female puppy.

Photos are “professional”. All emails are written in

poor English & requests for money is to be sent via

Western Union money order to a “Willie Fritz” in USA.

        Hope this helps

      • Pat

Hi, I am also in touch with the same person, did you end up getting the dog? What was your experience with this Damion person? It would be great if you could let me know so I don’t get sucked into a scam 🙂

      • Pat

Hi, so glad to see this message, I am about to buy from the same Damion Graham… is he a scam? Thanks for your help

    • Ange Foster

John mc is another one to add to the list.

      • Kam

        Add Anne Wood too

  • Anil Ghorpade

Very similar story…got a email from Alice Johnson who was advertising on cracker.com for two very cute maltese x shihtzu puppies.
Send me photos that simply melted the heart away.
Kept on asking for details to register the pets on my name and promised that the puppies will be at my doorstep mid-day-Monday when we were exchanging emails Sunday morning. (smelt a rat straightaway!)
Asked her to call me, but she kept on sending more photos and how nice “my” puppies were and I deserve to have them immediately!
Told her if she does not call before COB, it’s all off.
Never heard from her since… Now i know why. Thank god!!

  • Maria

Hi everyone, my name is Maria and I live in Perth. Found an ad on perth.backpage.com on two Pembroke Welsh Corgi pups (Male and Female). The ad said they were located in Perth but when they contacted me they said the pups are in Darwin! She stated in the email that I would have to pay $230 for one puppy or $400 for both of them to be transported by a plane over to Perth for me. Luckily I became very suspicious when she sent me pictures and they were completed different from the ad. Her name is Anna Luis so be careful!! Spelling and grammar is terrible so watch out.

    • Kristi

      Unbelievable Maria
Anna is trying to scam me today, same amount of money for miniature Dalmatians
      Not happy
Will send her an email that all of Australia is onto her scam
      Thank you
      Kristi

      • Zoe Lane

Wow I have just received an email from Anna lucky I had a look on here she is selling 2 Great Dane pups guess I won’t be getting them after all.?

        • Jindi Chapman

Me too…I was interested in the Great Dane pups. So disappointing.

      • Ange Foster

Funny their the names I was given for border collie pups today.

    • neteske gavin

My Goodness, my email is identical to that one!!! I cannot believe this!! I asked for huskies and their names were “lee” and “nina” as well!!!!!!
      this is absolutely crazy!

  • Mikaela Alice Langridge

    Hi All,
I was just reading through these posts and realised I was being scammed! I had two different sellers contact me about a Siberian husky pups. Their emails were very poorly structured and followed very similar story lines. Each said they were from Darwin and someone in their family had recently passed and they wanted to give away the puppies to new homes. Then it changes to $600 – $800 each and when asked if I can view the puppy their stories changed to that they lived in Perth or Sydney and they asked for my details to provide to the transportation companies and then the transportation companies will contact me for payment. They even went as far as to ask for pictures of the puppies as they grew up!
Please watch out for these signs!

    • Mikaela Alice Langridge

Update: They transportation companies contacted me for payment and they were both the same company. Very dodgy emails requesting payment and delivery to my door the next day.

    • Eloise Davison

      Hi Mikaela –
I’m a producer for Channel 9 – we are doing a story on the Today show on Monday, along with an ACCC representative about puppy scams.

  • Joshua D’Kaski

If anyone actually any of these comments, please be aware of the dangers. If ANYONE emails to you in regards to a pet and their location is completely different than what says on the add, that’s the first sign of concern. The second is that they will either ask for money up front by money order or to a company called MoneyGram, this is a scam. Anything to do with money orders or false invoices claiming to be an international pet travel agency, make sure to read where the money is being sent to. I can not stress this enough. If you get to the point where you are emailed an invoice about how you pay and were, please, PLEASE read where the money is being sent to. This will 99% be to a place called Cameroon. This is in AFRICA!!! Why would we pay an AFRICAN company/person to ship out a pet that we are paying for?! Doesn’t matter where you are located there are PLENTY of companies that do animal travel within our own states, even countries. Also if they have a number registered as anything similar to 0861 020 296 WILL BE A SCAM. I have also added a photo of an example of one of these “Invoices” to pay for a pet to be shipped. Please be safe and don’t fall for these desperate and sad people.
    Thanks for reading 🙂

  • Kristi

Thank you for this helpful information pet flyers!!!

  • Karl Hanes

Hi, I just came across this discussion, just looking for a puppy for the family, responded to an add and am currently in email discussion with a woman called Anna, who speaks broken English, has apparently moved to Darwin and is offering two puppies, one male one female, for free after her daughter who was looking after the puppies died in an accident, it all sounds very familiar doesn’t it? I was sent photos (see below), asked a heap of screening questions etc, apparently the puppy has to be registered with a transport company and it would cost $380 to deliver to Melbourne. I was hoping this is genuine as I am a kind, trusting sort of person who finds it hard to believe people would go to these lengths to scam people out of money, but forgive me for being very suspicious given what i have read in this thread, am actually now talking to some genuine breeders in Victoria, but anyway i will follow through if it goes any further and if it’s a scam as it appears to be. Thanks all for the information.

Does anyone have any comments or ideas on how I could make these scum sweat a bit ?
I really want to get these S*% B#$%@$*

    • Anil N

I received mails from 2 different people this morning. One lady named Gisella Anna had lost her daughter and the other was Tatiana Rose who lost her sister. They are putting their Mini Schnauzer puppies for adoption 🙂

  • TN

OMG! I am a fool. I trusted this lady that came across as ‘Isabella Dee’ who offered to adopt her maltese X toy poodle to me for free. All i had to pay for was transport to have the puppy delivered to my door since she said she lives in Darwin. She said she was giving away her male and female puppy for free because she is soon due to have her first child and could no longer care for the pups. I belived her!! She sent me a forward message from ‘GLOBAL ANIMAL TRANSPORT’ to send $315 to them through western union, to pay for the puppies flight. And as naive and stupid as i was, i did! I got in contact with this so called transport company and they the told me that i had to pay a refundable insurance fee which was $1500 and guess what? I payed!!! F#ck my life i am so stupid! They then ‘promised’ me that the puppy would be delivered the next morning. Then the next day came and they emailed me saying that i had to pay $3000 for a vaccination for the puppy to ensure that it doesnt catch any diseases from other animals on the flight. Thats when i got pissed! I called the number that the so called company had and i went off at the man! I then told him i couldnt afford it and he kept pushing me to just pay it so i could reciev the puppy. But i dont think he understood that i actually had no more money and couldnt pay for it. Lucky i had no money otherwise my dumbass would have just payed it -.- i continued to fight with him and he then threatened to report me to the police for ‘abondoned pet’ policy or some shit. I went crazy! And thats when i knew it was fake. Because how the hell could i be responsible for this puppy that i have not yet even seen or signed for. Learn from my mistakes people! And what makes me so mad is that she tried using the ‘God’ talk on me so that i could believe her lies and pay the $3000. I am a bliever of carma and i hope these lying scums get what they deserve!

    • kellie mannion

Hey Lyn, I just had the same sob story whilst trying to “adopt” an australian shepherd puppy.. Only this lady wanted $450 to ship to Victoria usING “LAN.CARGO” I almost fell for it. Until they wanted me to wire my payment to western union . Thats when I knEW it was a scam.

  • kellie mannion

The Alice springs lady isn’t the only one. I also heard from a lady in tasmania who is needing an operation and needs to rehome her 2 aust shepherds. I male 1 female. She just wants to give them to a loving family and all you have to do is send $450 by wire to a western union and they will be delivered to my door!

  • Nick

I am currently talking to poor old Anna. Her daughter died in an accident, she has been injured, Two 12 week old puppies (Papillons) 1 male and 1 female. She has an ear injury from the accident. Asked how I would look after the puppies, etc. Now has promised me them and has asked for my name, address, ph, etc. I used to be a prosecutor as I am a lawyer, my senses just started to sense this was a scam. It seemed like a Eastern European gang type of scam, so I did a quick search and here I am on this chat! [email protected] is the address. Broken English, etc, etc. This should be a story on 60 minutes!!

  • Marella

I have had a very similar experience to Nick. I have bern dealing with Anna who has 2 min pins. She claims they were her daughters. Sadly her daughter died in an accident. Anna was in thr same car. She can not care for puppies as she has hesring injury and has moved to Alice Springs for medical treatment. The puppies are free but i need to pay transport.
Alarm bells started ringing simply as well as poor English, the chronology given by Anna makes no sense. The puuoies are currently 13 weeks old. Apparently Annas daughter was very very attached to these puppies. Hard to imagine how the desth funeral move yo snother city has all happened so fast. Plus the list of promised items was stagering- favorite 2-3 toys, vet records, packets of food, vacination records, a documented life history including video of puppies likes and dislikes. The list went on and on like a sales pitch. These poor puppies have been very busy in the 6 weeks since Annas daughter bought them! Anna sent me pics of 2 puppies with tails docked and cropped ears.
So I asked Anna what vet performed thiese proceedures which I understand are now illegal in most states. I also asked for a copy of puppiea vacination records, name of vet and breeder.
    Funny, Anna has gone quiet.

  • Ange Foster

It seems Anna has come up with a new story. Now she has moved and her landlord doesn’t allow pups.

  • Freida Brown

I think I have just blundered into the same situation. I answered an advert on a site for pets for sale/adoption. I saw 2 baby cavapoo puppies I fell in love with. The answer address was to a Derrick. Then I got an email from someone called titadeco3 who writes in broken English that she wants the puppies to go to the very best home. She says she is now living in New Zealand because she has a new job, and she can’t keep the puppies. She says her Husband has just died. When I questioned her and noted some of my concerns about the “deal” she got most indignant claiming to be a Christian woman who would never do anything like that to another person. I apologised and said we would proceed. She told me she did not want money for the puppies – but I would have to pay for the pet delivery service at $500 per puppy. I had given her all my name, address, and phone details already, along with answering all her questions which were designed to see that I was a fit person, with means to look after the puppies in their “forever” home. I am still in conversation with her awaiting instructions on payment for delivery. While waiting I went to check any pet delivery services from NZ, and this was what popped up……….THANK HEAVENS! Thankyou all, you have just saved me $1000 and probably a whole lot more. I think I’ll send her another email informing her that I am forwarding all emails that have passed between us to the police, and see what she has to say about that.

    “Anna Luis” = Scammer

Seller has the dogs we wanted now being sold in 3 different states in Australia (not sure how dogs can live in 3 different places at the same time).

How her email starts with general – Hello, whats your experience with dogs and style of home the dog will be moving into. She also goes on about how sad it is to loose her 12 week old dogs because her new apartment doesnt allow dogs..

    — At this stage I was like ok—

Without giving more of her email mistakes away (just in case she reads this). Please do your research. Don’t buy without first seeing or buy from an approved seller

    • That Guy

Yeah, had the same person try with me.
Also noticed the 3 different locations and “other” red flags.
Due diligence is key… always do your research and check any info provided.
